This is an odd little recommendation, but there's probably a segment of the audience who remember the Nickelodeon science fiction show Space Cases.

I don't know much about it because it is, unfortunately, not available to stream or purchase anywhere. You can barely find proof it existed! What I'm able to link is a pretty good new video I ran into by YouTuber Austin McConnell, so you can learn a bit about this old program and how it should be available. It's fun!

Now, from what I hear, keelhauling was a rare form of punishment reserved for badly misbehaving sailors. What the old-timey Dutch navy would do was tie up a guy, throw him off the side into the drink, then drag him right across the ship's underbelly by a rope. And if you've ever seen the bottom of a ship, you'll know it's covered in rough, jagged barnacles no matter what you do...

Also, keep in mind the ocean is full of salt water. Basically, it's the worst form of torture a vanaa could imagine... they hate that stuff! Not that it'd stop Old Salt from trying it out with entire spaceships, as possible. He is not nice.

It's almost Halloween season, so maybe start transitioning from sci-fi geeking to sci-fi horror geeking with Pacific Rim (2013), which is back on US Netflix. I won't be argued with about this, it is a monster movie. Giant monsters are still monsters: that's why Godzilla is their king.

My sci-fi obsession for the moment is earning enough in-game currency in Helldivers 2 to get the Halo: ODST collab gear. I feel like it's something I've been waiting for since forever! Or, uh, maybe just since 2009 when the Halo: Helljumpers comic (written by the late and wonderful Peter David) started coming out.

As recent chapters have surely proven, this is a very pro jumping-down-from-space-to-fight-stuff comic.

Every summer we're presented with a pack of would-be blockbuster speculative fiction movies. As those go, Fantastic Four: First Steps is the pick of the litter for me. I'm not the kind of person who normally cares to watch things in IMAX, but more films are actually using it with intention lately, and there are a few parts us longtime fans will want to see... big.

My latest sci-fi related addiction is the podcast Fox Mulder is a Maniac. In it, people who love The X-Files dive into the many ways that Agent Mulder acts stranger than any monster of the week, lucks into most of his investigative successes, and is generally a fascinating disaster. First episode's free if you want to hear whether it's your kind of thing.

My recommendations this time aren't exactly free but I would absolutely recommend K-Pop Demon Hunters on Netflix. I've had the music stuck in my head all week and it's been my go to pump up soundtrack at the gym! Gotta love a good parable about self-empowerment and believing in yourself and friends and whatnot. This summer's starting off with some good movies it seems, and I'm planning on seeing Superman this weekend. See you there!

Apologies for the delay, I honestly kinda forgot how to color a page for a bit. That's maybe one of the downsides of always experimenting, you can kinda mess up what works already. Like trying to remember how to tie a tie, you experiment with another way, and all of a sudden, you're confused about which way you're supposed to do it. So, for the past couple of months, I've been dieting. It's not so much just reducing my calorie intake but also cutting out most carbs. That said, today should be Saturday when this page goes up, and I do believe in the practice of taking cheat days. Every time I work on this story, I think about grabbing a burger, and today, Saturday, is as good as any to treat yourself a little.

So I've been watching Twin Peaks. I started it before I learned of the passing of David Lynch, and now I have even more impetus to finish it. It's a great show, both small and strangely grand. Lynch had this way of making a character's inner life feel as big as the whole world. But anyway, I'm bringing this up because I got to the famous scene of Agent Cooper's advice, and it resonated with me this week.

“Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.”

And I'm thinking I could go for a burger right now.
